The Rector’s message

Dear students, it is a great pleasure and privilege for me to welcome you all to the digital edition of Sapienza University “Porte Aperte”.

We do believe that a public university has to be a strong point of reference for culture.

We do believe in the worth of knowledge: it is not only a useful means to raise one’s social and economic condition, but also an invaluable stepping-stone to attain what the Italian Constitution defines, in article 3, “the full development of the human person”.

First of all, I would like to remind you of how limiting could be to make the choice of one’s future education come down to a mere economic issue, as it could not reflect the complexity of each person.

But for a few extraordinary seconds that destiny may donate to us, the love for one’s work, that is a privilege of the few, is the best actual approximation to happiness on earth. (Primo Levi)

Yet, I do not want to dodge a question that many of you may ask: “Is study useful?”. Does it ensure a better future?

The answer is very easy. All the data available to us lead to maintain that the higher the level of education, the greater the chance to find a job and the higher the remuneration.

The higher the level of education, the greater the possibility to withstand the inevitable changes in the labour market, thanks also to an increased resilience to would-be chances.

Those same data remind us that the number of Italian graduates is extremely low if compared to the European average; this corroborates the urge to foster the access to university studies in all possible ways.

The burst of the coronavirus pandemic has crucially brought the need for a stronger role of science into the spotlight.

Educated people have to continuously face up to the complexity of phenomena, shunning the delusion to embrace makeshift and simplistic solutions.

I hope that Sapienza, thanks to its extraordinary wide course programme, may help you, as it has already done for millions of students, to choose a programme that meets your passion and curiosity and that may go along with you for life.

Our story began over 700 years ago. The list of notable persons who taught here is huge: there were Nobel laureates such as Guglielmo MarconiEnrico FermiDaniel Bovet, renowned people such as Giuseppe UngarettiAldo MoroNiccolò Copernico, Presidents of Republic, Prime Ministers, Ministers, Presidents of the European Parliament.

We are especially proud of having increasingly boosted the right to education, thanks to large funding and several activities. Sapienza boasts one of the taxation systems more attentive to needy social segments, the opening of new 24-hour reading rooms, the renovation of many lecture halls, libraries, laboratories and the creation of many others.

The international prestige has been also acknowledged and confirmed by the progress in various international rankings and is evidenced by the increased number of international students enrolled in Sapienza.

The presence of three university hospitals make Sapienza a hub for health training and research at regional, national and international level.

We must all learn to develop and nurture a keen “awareness” – a meaningful word indeed. I advise you all, young people, to choose your future with the utmost awareness. I ask parents to be aware that, thanks to their sacrifices, they will be able to ensure a better future to their sons and our country as well. I also struggle to raise public awareness about the need for a “society of knowledge” in order to favour the growth of our country and to make it compatible with social inclusion.

According to the European community, each Euro spent for training yields two and a half or three. Well a few other investments have such level of return! Dear students, study with passion, commitment and be the leaders of change and revival of our country. Study to escape the marginalisation arising from the lack of knowledge. We hope to have you soon with us, and we wish you the best of luck!
